1909 June 5~14, 1909 Ryokoku Motomachi Permanent Building (Honjo Motomachi Kokugikan) / [East] Yokozuna: Hitachiyama Ozeki: Komagatake Sekiwaki: Nishinoumi / [West] Yokozuna: Umegaya Ozeki: Tachiyama Hōde Ōzeki : Kunimiyama Sekiwaki: Gyokutsubaki / From the early 20s of the Meiji era, there was an opinion that "a permanent sumo hall that can hold stable entertainment" was needed, so it was decided to move to build a permanent hall. At the time of completion, "Shobukan" was a strong candidate for the name, but when he saw the sentence "Kakuriki is the national skill of Japan" drafted for the opening ceremony by the writer Emi Mizukage, who was a great sumo wrestler, he felt strongly about this and proposed "Kokugikan" at the last minute. The opening ceremony was an unprecedented success, and when Itagaki Gosuke, the chairman of the founding committee, proudly declared that the name "Kokugikan" had been named, the venue was filled with thunderous applause, and sumo wrestling was transformed from a "Shinto ritual" to a "national sport." Since the naming was delayed until the end, the numbering table lists it as "Ryokoku Motomachi Permanent Museum", but in January of the following year, the name "Honjo Motomachi Kokugikan" was written for the first time in the numbering table. Unlike the current Kokugikan, the previous generation was located in the precincts of the Honjo Kaikoin Temple along Keiyo Road.
