Rikidozan did not initially make the KARATE chop his specialty.
At first, his specialties were 'thuttatsuri' and 'slap' techniques, as in sumo.
His special move, the KARATE chop, began when Rikidozan, while training in America, faced Danny Pletches, the champion of the state at the time, in Nebraska. When he was nearly knocked out by the rough fighter, he unleashed a desperate hand chop that landed on Pletches's neck, securing a come-from-behind victory.
The crowd was stunned by its power, and even Rikidozan himself was in disbelief. Since then, KARATE's Rikidozan was born.
