Wajima Koichi / Published in 2006 (46 formats)
Hardback / Tokyo Shimbun Publishing / Spirit, stamina, courage—these are my assets! Let's cheer up, I can't afford to lose! The legend of the phoenix that breaks conventions.
Koichi Wajima became the first Japanese to win the heavyweight world boxing title in 1971. He defended his title six times and reclaimed it twice in rematch matches. He was a 'fighter of fire' who unleashed the unconventional 'frog jump' move, never stopping moving forward no matter how hard he was hit. He returned from Sakhalin (Sakhalin), grew up in a pioneering village in Hokkaido, moved to Tokyo almost like a runaway, worked various jobs including construction worker, and encountered boxing at age 24. His tumultuous life perfectly aligns with Japan's postwar path of reconstruction and rapid growth. "Energy," "Courage," "Determination to lose." Now, we can learn something we have lost from Wajima's journey. The Tokyo Shimbun and Chunichi Shimbun evening edition serialization of "This Road" now in volume!
