At the beginning of this century, the legendary judoka Mitsuyo Maeda traveled the world, repeatedly competing in mixed martial arts matches and achieving 2,000 undefeated victories. In his youth, he demonstrated the strength of judo worldwide and traveled to promote it, never losing in matches where he wore a judo uniform against boxers and wrestlers who were all giants. Because of his strength and character, he came to be respectfully called Conde Koma (Count Koma). The judo he taught to Brazil was passed down to the Gracie family, and 50 years later, as Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, it took the world of martial arts by storm. In his later years, he settled in Belém, Brazil, devoted himself to pioneering the Amazon jungle as a private consul, and wholeheartedly supported immigrants who came from Japan in pursuit of their dreams to Brazil. He had the opportunity to return to Japan, but he disliked leaving behind the settlers he had cared for and never returned home for the rest of his life. His death was widely reported locally, and it is said that not only Japanese but many Brazilians attended the funeral.
