Makiko Ida portrayed with overwhelming realism the lives of people on the "margins" of society—such as a pro wrestler who was unreliable, second-generation Chinese orphans left behind, homosexuals, and girls engaged in compensated dating. Her writing carried a sense of urgency that went beyond the realm of third-party "reporting." Makiko Ida's reporting method was forceful and bold, intervening in the lives of interviewees and changing their destinies. However, there was likely a bond with the interviewees that could be called a "soul contract." Because for Ida, "writing" was "living," and like the interviewees struggling in life, it was a heartfelt act.

■ 'Pro Wrestling Girl Legend' (Kanou Shobo, 1990) A timeless masterpiece of Pro Wrestling nonfiction that gave rise to the phrase 'heartbreaking.'
